Reflections on the Paschal Triduum

Reflections from the pastoral ministers at Liturgical Press:

“The Sacred Pascal Triduum is a single, seamless liturgical moment, the premier celebration of the liturgical year.

“The Roman Missal states: ‘The singing of the people, the ministers, and the priest celebrant - all have a special importance in the celebration of these days.’

“To ensure full, robust participation during these Three Days and to showcase the unity of the sacramental moments bear in mind these reflections:

“The liturgical season of Lent ends quietly on the afternoon of Holy Thursday as the Pascal Triduum begins. The word Triduum means “three days” in Latin. This period of time encompasses the three-day period from the evening of Holy Thursday through Easter Sunday evening. While many expect the Triduum to end with Holy Saturday, it actually extends through evening prayer on Easter Sunday.

“These three days from Thursday evening to Sunday evening unfold the entirety of Jesus‘s passion and resurrection, his paschal mystery. Each of the celebrations of the Triduum is unique in the story it reveals; however, these celebrations do not stand alone. These three great holy days are celebrated as one liturgy because death is not to be separated from resurrection.

“The liturgy of the Triduum does the work of calling people into communion with the holy and living God.

“Come! Triduum liturgies are inherently awe inspiring, but their fullest effect is present when everyone comes, when the church is full, and when the local parish, gathered in the name of Jesus Christ, assembles together…

“These liturgies are the actual work of the worshipers themselves. The more members of the body of Christ, the more complete the liturgy and the richer the experience for everyone, and the more likely that our liturgical practice goes out into the world”

See you there!

Gratefully,

Fr. Dan, Pastor
