A New Mission for an Old Mission - Part 2
Between 1901 and 1969, the school of Philosophy and Theology was here on and off at various times. A parish was established in 1925, then the earthquake hit and badly damaged the buildings. The Poor Clares arrived in 1928. San Roque was established as a mission of the parish in 1939, then became a parish in 1953. The Archive Library wing was constructed in the late 1960's. A retreat center operated in the late 1970's for about 15 years. The Novitiate program for the novices arrived in 2017.
Now, all of us housed at the Old Mission are exploring ways to continue to cooperate together as we move into the future. Our history of reinventing ourselves gives a strong foundation for creative responses to our future as we all seek to further ways to make the Kingdom of God more present to our world. Would anyone care to try to predict our future? The first two friars living here (Antonio Paterna and Cristobal Oramas) and the first Chumash converts (Catayu — Antonio Maria and Jiocru — Vicente Maria) would never have guessed what the future would bring to their little tule and mud hut mission in 1786!
