Nicholas of Lyra — the Most Famous Franciscan You’ve Never Heard of

Guest Speaker: Fr. Garrett Galvin OFM, President of the Franciscan School of Theology

How do YOU read scripture? Probe your answer in the company of Nicholas of Lyra, author of the first printed biblical commentary, a copy of which is located in the Santa Barbara Mission Archive-Library.

Franciscan scholar Fr. Garrett Galvin will be your guide in a 75 minute session that will walk you across the bridge Nicholas built connecting Sts. Francis and Clare with the church that came after them. HIs widely read biblical studies has an enormous influence on the Medieval and Renaissance church, Protestant and Catholic, from the days of St. Thomas Aquinas, through Martin Luther, right up to the Missionary work of the Spanish Friars who founded Mission Santa Barbara. This session is for everyone, especially those who’ve been part of bible study groups or might plan to join one in the coming year.
